Frequently Asked Questions

Whether it’s a refrigerator or an undercounter model, a lack of ice production usually points to a problem with water flow or temperature. Common causes include a clogged water filter, frozen fill tube, low water pressure, or a faulty water inlet valve. Undercounter ice makers can also stop working if the condenser coils are dirty or the machine isn’t getting proper ventilation. Try checking the water filter and making sure the unit has good airflow. If it still won’t make ice, schedule a professional ice maker repair to inspect the water system and internal components.

Bad-tasting or cloudy ice usually means there’s buildup in the water system. For both refrigerator and undercounter ice makers, this can happen if the water filter is old, the lines contain mineral deposits, or the bin hasn’t been cleaned recently. Undercounter ice makers, in particular, should be cleaned and sanitized every few months to prevent mold and scale buildup. Replace the filter, clean the ice bin with warm, soapy water, and run a cleaning cycle if your model includes one. If the ice still tastes or smells off, a technician can flush the water lines and check for internal contamination.

Over time, mineral deposits, mold, and bacteria can build up inside the water lines, bin, and internal parts, especially if you have hard water. For refrigerator ice makers, cleaning about every six months is ideal — usually when you replace the water filter. This helps keep the water system clear and the ice fresh. Undercounter ice makers, however, often need more frequent attention. Because they produce larger volumes of ice and have more exposed components, they should be cleaned every three to four months.
