Common issues

Refrigerators rely on a variety of components working together to maintain proper temperatures and preserve food. When one of those components fails, performance issues can quickly follow.

Many refrigerator problems are caused by worn or failing components such as evaporator fan motors, condenser fans, compressors, start relays, thermostats, defrost systems, water inlet valves, and clogged drain lines. Our technicians carefully diagnose the issue to determine which parts need repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your freezer isn’t cooling while the compressor is running, it could be caused by a faulty evaporator fan, blocked vents, or a defrost system problem. Issues like this require a professional diagnostic — do not try to unscrew or tamper with any internal components yourself, as it can be dangerous. Our technicians can safely identify and fix the problem, restoring your freezer to proper operation.

Water pooling inside the fridge is usually caused by a clogged or frozen defrost drain. When the defrost cycle melts frost from the coils, that water should flow down a drain tube to the drip pan. If the drain is blocked, the water backs up and collects under drawers or shelves. Other possible causes include a damaged door gasket that lets in warm air, a cracked drain pan, or improper leveling of the refrigerator. You can try flushing the drain with warm water, but if the leak continues, a qualified technician can clear the blockage, check the seals, and make sure your refrigerator drains properly to prevent recurring water damage.

If your refrigerator isn’t making ice, it could be due to a clogged water filter, a frozen water line, or a faulty ice maker or inlet valve. If the freezer temperature is above 10°F, the ice maker won’t produce ice properly. Try replacing the water filter and checking for blockages first. If the issue continues, a qualified technician should inspect the system and make necessary repairs.

A power surge can trip the circuit breaker and may damage the refrigerator’s control board. First, check that the outlet and breaker are working properly. If the fridge still won’t turn on, the surge may have caused electrical damage inside the appliance. We recommend installing surge protectors to protect your refrigerator and other valuable electronics in your home.

For most refrigerators, a temperature between 35°F and 38°F is ideal. The freezer should be set to 0°F. Keeping temperatures within these ranges helps preserve food, maintain efficiency, and reduce unnecessary strain on the appliance. If your refrigerator has a temperature display, it's a good idea to check it periodically to ensure it's maintaining the correct temperature. If your refrigerator or freezer cannot maintain these temperatures consistently, it may indicate a problem with the cooling system, airflow, or temperature controls.

We recommend cleaning your refrigerator's condenser coils at least once a year. Dust, dirt, and pet hair can build up on the coils over time, causing the refrigerator to work harder than necessary. Homes with pets may benefit from cleaning the coils every six months. Regular coil cleaning can help improve efficiency, reduce wear on components, and extend the life of your refrigerator.
